Notes

Jan Lenout came to Zeeuws Vlaanderen around 1600 from the area of Leuven. This was during the period when the Netherlands was in an 80 year war with Spain. The war lasted from 1560 to 1640. Leuven, now part of Belgium, was then a town in the southern part of the Netherlands. (Belgium was not founded until 1832, following a war of independence with the Netherlands.) When Lenhout traveled to Zeeuws Vlaanderen it was within the boundaries of the Netherlands. Zeeuws Vlaanderen is now in the southern part of the Netherlands, bordering Belgium. The Leenhouts were mostly farmers. Between 1848 and 1900 many of them emigrated to the United States. This was often due to economical conditions, but many also moved for religious reasons. At that time of industrial revolution it was very difficult to maintain the old traditions and to keep the old rigid religion.
